    Description

Hygrophila angustifolia rubra is a slender, red-tinged stem plant with long, narrow willow-like leaves that develop warm coppery-red tones, particularly under good light. Its fine-textured leaves and upright growth habit add a soft, graceful quality to the midground of planted aquariums, providing a contrast in form to broader-leafed plants nearby.

It is easy to keep, growing under medium light without CO2 injection. Like most Hygrophila, it is a vigorous grower once established and responds well to regular trimming, which encourages dense, bushy regrowth from the trimmed stems. Cuttings root readily in the substrate and can be replanted to thicken a planting group.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Hygrophila angustifolia rubra suits aquariums from 60 litres upward and works well in the midground as a textural contrast plant. Its combination of easy care and attractive reddish colouration makes it a popular choice for hobbyists who want colour in their planted layout without the demands of high-maintenance species.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

Does Hygrophila angustifolia rubra need CO2?

No. It grows well under medium light without CO2. CO2 can accelerate growth and intensify the red toning but is not necessary.

How vivid is the red colouration?

Under good medium to bright light the leaves develop warm coppery-red tones, particularly on new growth. In low light the leaves become greener and less distinctly coloured.

How do I maintain a bushy, full appearance?

Regular trimming is key. Top the stems and replant the cuttings alongside the main plant. The trimmed stems will branch and produce new side shoots.

    How large does it grow?

It can grow quite tall if left untrimmed, but regular cutting keeps it compact and suited to the midground of most aquariums.

    Is it suitable for beginners?

Yes. It is one of the easier stem plants to keep and is a good choice for hobbyists who want a coloured plant without complex care requirements.
