    Description

Hygrophila lancea Araguaia is a distinguished and elegant Hygrophila variety from the Araguaia river in Brazil producing slender, narrow leaves in deep green on upright stems — a more refined and subtle stem plant compared to larger-leaved Hygrophila species. Its narrow, graceful leaf form and manageable size make it a versatile choice for mid to background planting in a range of planted aquarium styles.

It benefits from medium light and CO2 supplementation for compact, structured growth and the richest green colouration. Without CO2 it can be maintained but tends to grow more loosely. It is a well-behaved stem plant that does not overgrow rapidly and is generally easier to keep in a tidy, maintained form than many fast-growing Hygrophila species.

Supplied as a Tropica 1-2-GROW! tissue culture cup, this plant arrives completely free from snails, pest algae, and pesticide residue. Rinse the gel, separate stems and plant into the substrate. Suits aquariums from 40 litres upward — an elegant, refined background stem plant that is fully shrimp safe and well suited to detailed planted aquariums.

    Plant Sizes

The image of the plant you'll be receiving is just an example of what you can expect. Each plant is unique and may vary in size and shape, so it won't be an exact match to the photo. If we provide a size guide, keep in mind that it's just an estimate and that plants can vary in size depending on the time of year.

    WHAT TO EXPECT

Tissue cultured plants are supplied young and grown in a sterile environment, so they arrive free from snails, algae and pesticide residue. They may look smaller on arrival, but each cup contains multiple plantlets designed to be divided and planted out, where they establish quickly with minimal melt and grow into place.

Customers praised the tissue culture's excellent quality and condition on arrival. The plant can be split into multiple portions, offering great value. Growth experiences varied - some saw "fast growth" and beautiful red coloring, while others found it "slow" despite packaging claims. Customers noted it "grows nicely" once established and creates an attractive carpet effect.

    • Great value for money, forming a beautiful red carpet taking up about 20 cm in my tank.
    • Arrived in excellent condition, you can split the plant into 6 pieces - more than one plant!
    • Very good quality as you would expect, seeing some good growth on day 12.

Good quality as expected from the little pots

Probably should have researched 'snail's favourite food' though as my giant snail made a beeline and demolished in in very short order :( My own fault, but beware if you have snails!

Arrived in excellent condition and easy to plant, growing nicely in the tank. Although the plant is small it will grow and a big plus you can split the plant into 6 pieces or less so your actually getting more than one plant for the price of one.

Great value for money, though it's a bit of a pain to plant the little stems individually it's well worth it. After a few weeks they are forming a beautiful red carpet taking up about 20 cm in my tank.

A very nice looking plant. It really needs to be separated from the clump it comes in to grow well. One tub can be separated out to cover an area of about 10cm x 10cm.

The packaging claims 15cm growth in 2 weeks, or thereabouts. Mine is definitely a slow burner, despite the tank being dosed using EI nutrients and liquid carbon daily and the plants getting plenty of light.

It's been planted for about 3 weeks now, and is just starting to reach out start to find it's feet.

    Product Details

    1. Grown in a laboratory

Tissue Cultured Plants are unique in so much as they are grown in a laboratory and not a greenhouse. As a result of this, a cast iron guarantee is offered which is 100% so snails and no pesticides.

    2. How to handle them

They're a bit different from potted plants because they're grown in an agae solution that contains nutrients and hormones to encrougage plants to grow. Some agar is liquid, others are more solid depending on what the growers prefers. Regardless once they arrive with you, acclimatise to room temperature and then rinse under luke warm tap water. Then plant up.

    3. Pot sizes

Nearly all TC pots are 5cm in diameter and the pots will range in fullness depending on many factors such as the natural growth speed of the plant and the time the grower has held them for. Sometimes the pots are exceptionally full and sometimes not so full - something we cannot control. But either way, they're still really good value when you look at the overall plant mass.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

Is Hygrophila lancea Araguaia easy to keep?

It is manageable with medium light and benefits from CO2 for the best compact, well-coloured growth. It is less demanding than many exotic stem plants.

    Does it need CO2?

CO2 is recommended for the most compact, well-structured growth. Without CO2 it grows more loosely but can still be maintained.

How does it differ from common Hygrophila species?

Its leaves are noticeably narrower and more refined than standard Hygrophila varieties, giving it a more elegant and detailed appearance in the aquarium.

Is it safe for shrimp tanks?

Yes. As a Tropica 1-2-GROW! tissue culture plant it arrives free from snails, algae, and pesticide residue.

    How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant cuttings in the substrate. They root readily and grow on with the same slender leaf form.
