Description
Lilaeopsis brasiliensis, the Brazilian micro sword, is a compact carpeting plant from South America with fine, narrow leaves that grow in small tufts and gradually form a low, grassy carpet across the aquarium floor. Its delicate appearance and small leaf size make it a popular foreground choice in nature aquarium and aquascaping layouts where a refined, natural-looking carpet is desired.
It is a moderately demanding species that benefits from medium light and CO2 supplementation for effective carpeting. Without CO2 the plant can still be grown but spreads slowly and may not achieve the dense, flat carpet it is capable of producing under better conditions. A nutrient-rich substrate aids establishment and encourages lateral spread via runners.
Supplied as an established potted plant, Lilaeopsis brasiliensis suits aquariums from 40 litres upward. Planting in small tufts spaced 2–3 cm apart across the foreground allows runners to connect and fill in over several weeks, building into a neat micro-sword carpet that suits both small and large planted aquariums.

Does Lilaeopsis brasiliensis need CO2 to carpet?
CO2 significantly speeds up the carpeting process and helps the plant stay low and dense. Without it the plant spreads more slowly and may grow more loosely.
How is it different from Lilaeopsis mauritiana or novae-zelandiae?
All three are similar grass-like carpeting plants. Brasiliensis is native to South America, has slightly broader leaves than the other two, and typically requires more light and ideally CO2 for a dense carpet.
How do I plant it?
Divide the pot into small tufts and plant them 2–3 cm apart across the foreground. The runners will gradually connect the tufts and fill in the gaps.
What substrate does it need?
A fine, nutrient-rich substrate such as an aqua soil is ideal. In plain gravel, add root tabs to supply the nutrients the plant needs at root level.
Is it suitable for nano tanks?
Yes. Its very small size makes it a practical foreground plant for nano tanks from 40 litres and upward.
