Description

Cryptocoryne bullosa is a rare and striking Cryptocoryne from Borneo producing broad, deeply puckered leaves with an unusually heavily textured surface — the bullate texture (the same characteristic referenced in the name) gives each leaf a quilted, three-dimensional quality unlike most other Crypts. It is one of the more coveted collector's Cryptocoryne species.

Despite the rare status, care is not especially demanding: plant in substrate, low light, no CO2 required. Root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate support good growth. Like all Crypts, it can melt when first moved — leave the rhizome in place and it will regrow. Once established it is a striking specimen plant.

Plant roots in the substrate without burying the crown. Use as a midground feature plant for best impact.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

What is 'crypt melt'?

When moved to a new environment, Cryptocoryne sometimes dissolve their leaves. This is normal — leave the rhizome in place and new leaves will regrow within a few weeks.

What makes bullosa distinctive?

The heavily puckered, quilted leaf texture is unlike most other Cryptocoryne species — each leaf has a three-dimensional quality that makes it a genuine stand-out specimen.

Is it hard to find?

Yes — bullosa is one of the rarer Crypt species in the hobby. Worth adding to a collection if you can find it in stock.

Does it need CO2?

No — grows without CO2. Root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate are more beneficial.

What size does it reach?

Compact to medium — typically 10–20cm, making it a good foreground to midground specimen.
