Description

Eleocharis montevidensis is a taller-growing hairgrass from South America, producing fine, grass-like stems that reach 20–40 cm in height. Unlike the low-growing dwarf hairgrass varieties, montevidensis creates a mid to background grassy effect that adds a naturalistic, meadow-like quality to planted aquariums with more vertical depth.

It is straightforward to keep, growing under medium light without CO2 injection. A nutrient-rich substrate supports healthy root development, and the plant responds well to iron supplementation via liquid fertiliser or root tabs. Trimming the stems occasionally encourages denser regrowth from the base.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Eleocharis montevidensis suits aquariums from 80 litres upward where its height can be appreciated. It works well as a mid to background grass element in nature aquarium layouts, creating a distinct textural contrast alongside broad-leafed plants.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

How is Eleocharis montevidensis different from dwarf hairgrass?

It grows much taller — up to 40 cm — compared to the low-growing dwarf forms. It is used as a mid to background grassy element rather than a foreground carpet.

Does it need CO2?

No. It grows well under medium light without CO2 injection, though CO2 can accelerate growth and produce denser stems.

What size aquarium suits it?

Aquariums from 80 litres upward, particularly those with height of at least 40 cm, allow the full stature of this plant to be appreciated.

How do I plant it?

Remove from the pot, divide into smaller clumps, and plant in a nutrient-rich substrate with space between clumps. It will spread slowly via side shoots over time.

How do I keep it looking tidy?

Trim stems to the desired height with sharp scissors. The plant will regrow from the base, becoming denser over time with regular trimming.
