    Description

Microsorum mini adds natural fern texture to aquarium wood and rock. Its green leaves have gently wavy edges and visible veining, creating a leafy focal point without needing to plant it into the substrate. Supplied as one potted plant, it is a useful choice for adding detail around your hardscape.

Easy care for a natural planted aquarium

This Java fern is a slow-growing rhizome plant suited to low-light setups. It can be grown without injected CO2, making it a practical option for a straightforward planted aquarium. Position it on wood or rock where the leaves have room to open, rather than forcing it into a tight gap.

    How to plant Microsorum mini

    1. Carefully remove the nursery pot and gently tease away the growing medium from the roots.
    2. Rinse the plant, then secure it to wood or rock with aquarium-safe plant glue or fine line.
    3. Keep the rhizome, the horizontal stem from which the leaves and roots grow, exposed. Do not bury it in gravel or soil.

Trim damaged older leaves close to their base as needed. A suitable liquid aquarium plant fertiliser can supply nutrients through the water.

    Product FAQs

    Helpful details before you buy.

How do I plant Microsorum mini?

Remove the nursery pot and gently tease away the growing medium, then rinse the roots. Secure the rhizome to aquarium wood or rock using fine line or aquarium-safe plant glue. Keep the rhizome exposed rather than burying it in gravel or soil.

Does Microsorum mini need injected CO2?

No. This Java fern can grow without injected CO2 and is suitable for a low-tech planted aquarium.

How much light does it need?

Low to moderate aquarium lighting is suitable. Strong lighting is not needed for this slow-growing fern.

    Where should I position it?

Attach it to wood or rock in the foreground or midground, depending on your aquarium layout. Leave space around the leaves so they are not crushed or shaded completely by neighbouring plants.

Does it need root tabs or liquid fertiliser?

Use a suitable liquid aquarium plant fertiliser to provide nutrients through the water. Root tabs beneath the plant are not necessary when it is attached to wood or rock.

    How can I propagate it?

Once established, a healthy rhizome can be divided into sections with leaves and roots attached. Java ferns can also form small daughter plants on their leaves; allow these to develop leaves and roots before separating them.

Are black dots underneath the leaves a disease?

Regular dark dots on the underside of mature Java fern leaves can be sporangia, the fern's reproductive structures. These are normal. Spreading soft, decaying areas or holes should not automatically be treated as the same thing.

    What will I receive?

One potted Microsorum mini. Leaf arrangement and supplied size vary naturally. The aquarium photograph is an illustrative planting example; wood, rock, substrate and other plants are not included.
