Description

Rotala Blood Red is a vivid and richly coloured aquarium stem plant selected for its exceptionally deep, saturated red colouration across the leaves and stems. Under bright light and CO2 the colour is intense and almost luminous, making it one of the most impactful red plants available for the background of high-tech planted aquariums.

Like most high-colour Rotala varieties, it requires bright light and CO2 injection for the most vivid colouration and compact growth. Under lower light the red fades rapidly toward pink or green. Iron-rich fertilisation is important for sustaining pigmentation on new growth, and regular trimming keeps the stems compact and promotes the freshest, most vivid new leaves.

Supplied as an established potted plant, Rotala Blood Red suits aquariums from 50 litres upward with bright lighting and CO2. Used in the background in groups, its deep blood-red colouration creates a dramatic focal point that pairs powerfully with lime-green or pale-green plants positioned in the foreground and midground.

Product FAQs

Helpful details before you buy.

Does Rotala Blood Red need CO2?

Yes. CO2 injection is essential for the deep blood-red colouration and compact growth. Without CO2 the red fades to pink or green and the plant loses its visual impact.

What light level does it need?

Bright light is required. The deeper and more sustained the light, the more vivid the red colouration. Medium or low light will cause rapid colour loss.

How do I maintain the deepest red?

Bright light, CO2, and iron-rich liquid fertiliser together produce the best results. All three are needed for consistent, long-lasting blood-red colour.

Is it suitable for beginners?

No. It is best suited to hobbyists with bright lighting and CO2 injection. It is more demanding than standard Rotala rotundifolia.

How do I propagate it?

Trim stems and replant cuttings in the substrate. Regular trimming keeps the plant compact and encourages vivid new red growth from fresh growing tips.
